What the law says
Banking matters include reviewing loan and security documents, disputes over charges, wrongful debits or account freezes, one-time settlements, and proceedings before the Debts Recovery Tribunal or under the SARFAESI Act, 2002. A customer with a complaint against a bank or a regulated entity can first complain to the entity and then, if unresolved, to the Ombudsman under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021. Some disputes can also go to consumer commissions or civil courts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I complain against a bank?
First complain in writing to the bank. If it is rejected or not resolved within the period the scheme allows, file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman through the RBI's complaint portal.
My account has been frozen. What can I do?
Ask the bank in writing for the reason and the authority that directed it. If it was frozen at the instance of police or an agency, the remedy lies with that authority or the court concerned.
Can a loan be settled?
Banks may agree to a one-time settlement under their policies. Get the sanction letter in writing and a no-dues certificate after payment.
